The Trouble Club: Let's discuss......the Pope! With Jessica Wärnberg

The papacy is one of the world’s longest-running institutions. It may also be one of the strangest. There have been rival popes, an English pope and even, legend has it, a female pope.

Emerging as the anonymous leader of a marginal cult in the humblest quarters of the city, the pope began as the pastor of a maligned and largely foreign flock. Less than 300 years later, he sat enthroned in a lofty, heavily gilt basilica, a religious leader endorsed (and financed) by the emperor himself. Eventually, the Roman pontiff would supplant even the emperors as de facto ruler of Rome and pre-eminent leader of the Christian world. By the nineteenth century, it would take an army to wrest the city from the pontiff’s grip.

Historian Jessica Wärnberg’s may not be able to cover all the 266 individuals who have been pope in the last 2000 odd years, but throughout our evening with her she's going to give it her best shot. From St Peter in the first century all the way to Pope Francis today, join us for a truly intriguing historical journey.
